Remembering the “WHY”

As you read this, you are surrounded by an overwhelming amount of information.  Thank you Al Gore!

As we turn our thinking to our strategic planning and concepts for business development in the coming year the possibilities before us can seem a bit overwhelming.  How can we sift, filter and prioritize?  One way to do this is to return again to our mission and vision statements (of course, we all have this written on the wall of the break room…).  What are our core values and why are we doing what we do?

Google’s corporate mission is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

Steve Job’s original mission statement was: “To make a contribution to the world by making tools for the mind that advance humankind.” (It has since changed quite a bit…)

Sometimes, in spite of our best efforts, our world paints a negative picture of business and business people.  This can be disheartening.  But this wasn’t the root of any beginning.  No-one starts a business with a negative mission and vision.

So this year as you wrap up, analyse, recap and plan next year’s improvements I invite you to add: “reflect upon our beginnings” to your year’s end list.  All business is about helping people.  Which people and in which way is our individual organisational mission.  How much we help and how many is the measure of our value.

And when we can measure it… (yeah, you know the rest.)
